Hurricane Harvey: A Hackers Paradise
The bad guys are at it again. Hackers are now using the Hurricane Harvey disaster to solicit online users to give to charitable organizations benefiting the Texas flood victims. They are using many avenues including links on social media, text messages, and phishing emails
As you might expect, these are not Legit. In fact, clicking on one of these links can very well infect your system with malware or some other nasty virus. These nefarious scams are not new to the online community. Previous disasters have been exploited before, but this time the bad guys are coming out with guns blazing.
Here are some examples:
- Facebook pages dedicated to victim relief links to scam websites.
- Tweets going out with links to charitable websites, soliciting donations, but include links to scam sites or virus infection.
- Phishing emails dropping in user’s inboxes are asking for donations to the #HurricaneHarvey Relief Fund.
For the next few weeks, be cautious while online with anything covering the Hurricane Harvey disaster. If you would like to donate to the victims of this terrible disaster, please go to the website of the charity of your choice and make a donation.
