CONSIDERATIONS FOR RE-OPENING AND BRINGING STAFF BACK TO WORK

In the upcoming weeks, many businesses will begin to “re-open.” Re-opening covers a lot of ground. For some, it’s a complete re-opening, others it’s bringing “work from home” staff back to the office, and some may be bringing back formerly laid off or furloughed employees. The one commonality for everyone is we’re all in this uncharted territory together. With that in mind, here are a few things to consider as you open your doors to clients and bring your staff back.

HUMAN RESOURCES CONSIDERATIONS

  • How many of your staff will you bring back and how quickly?
  • If you laid people off and are bringing them back, do they have to go through a normal hiring process, or will your hiring processes be relaxed?
  • Does your local government have any requirements for rehiring staff?
  • When you bring back a laid off or furloughed employee, do they retain their years of employment? Do they get the same amount of paid time off and sick leave?
  • Considering travel will most likely not happen until mid-summer, how does PTO impact staffing for the second half of the year?
  • How will you handle those employees that have a serious illness?
  • What will you do when an employee shows up to work sick?

HEALTH AND BUSINESS CONSIDERATIONS

  • Will you require your staff to check temperatures?  If so, how often
  • Will you require your staff to wear masks or gloves?
  • Will you require your clients to wear masks?
  • Will hand sterilization stations and disposable masks be provided to staff and clients?
  • Will waiting areas be rearranged to meet social distancing guidelines?
  • Will modify or re-think the frequency and standards of cleaning shared common areas like breakrooms, bathrooms, shared offices, waiting areas, and supply closets?
  • Do your employees clean their own workspaces? How often?

This is nowhere near a fully comprehensive list and we will surely learn as we go. However, we hope that these few thoughts and questions help you jumpstart your thinking on how to re-open your business and bring employees back into the office.

I would like to recommend Joe Goldstein and Optimized Computer Solutions for your computer network development, deployment, and support programs. Acris Solutions has contracted with Optimized Computer Solutions since July 2009. In that time they have facilitated our migration from a physical server environment to a virtualized server environment.
